Finding the Best Pet For A Family
Lifestyle Consider your lifestyle and your activities when you are looking to get a cat or a dog. Do you travel a lot on the weekends? Do you and your spouse both work all day, where the dog would be left alone for long periods? Do you have to travel with work and the cat would be home alone for days on end? Before you bring something else in to your family you need to consider all of the scheduling details. Sure, the kids might be home during the summer to let the dog or to feed the cat during the day, but what about when they go to school? And eventually your kids will move out, so what happens to the dog or the cat then? Busy lifestyles aren’t always conducive to having a pet. No matter if you are on the road because of sports or if you are gone because of a heavy work load, someone needs to be able to care for the pet during the day, every day of the week. A dog can’t be expected to stay indoors for ten hours without being let out. A cat cant go three days without being fed. No matter what type of pet you bring home, it will need some attention. ![]() That’s not to say that busy people can’t have pets though. When you are just gone for a couple of hours at night and someone is home during the day, that is perfect for a pet. They have attention during the day, a few hours alone at night ad then attention again (if needed) during the night hours. And people who camp as a family when they travel can easily take a dog along for the ride and the trip. Type of Pet The type of pet you are considering is also determined by your lifestyle. Do you have really small children? You will need a dog or a cat breed that is tolerant of being pulled on and followed around. Do you have kids that are older but playful? Then a larger, friendly breed of dog would work best for you. Do you like to have a pet around, but not want the chore of letting it in and out several times a day? Then a cat or a reptile might be the best choice for you. Consider all of the things you do and how a pet would or could affect your life and if that is an acceptable change or not.
