Beginners Cat Care Tips

When you bring a kitten in to your home, you might not realize that with optimum care, it has the potential to live for twenty years! Cats that have healthy genes and ones that are given great care can be healthy for a long time and remain a great companion for you, your spouse or even your kids for a long time. What can you do in order to provide that great care so they do have a long and healthy life? The tips are fairly easy to follow with a little bit of knowledge.

Keep Cats Indoors

Cats used to be kept in the barn. Since many people lived on farms, that was the norm. The cars became more popular, cities got larger and there were more streets around. Life outdoors soon became treacherous for a cat that didn’t live on a farm. And that doesn’t take in to account the other wild animals and diseases a cat left outdoors can face.

To keep your cat at its healthiest, it is best to keep it indoors. No matter how many people tell you otherwise that cats need to roam, it simply isn’t true. A cat kept indoors won’t know any differently ad will be perfectly content to be kept in air conditioned comfort and heated spaces. An indoor cat won’t be exposed to rabies, fleas, diseases and attack from other cats and wild animals. And cats who do go outside on average only live half as long as a cat that is kept indoors will live. Cat Care Tips For Beginners

Buy Quality Food

What goes in to your cat is important in order to keep them healthy too. Cheap cat food is usually cheap because it contains fillers like corn that are inexpensive ingredients. Cat food that costs a little bit more has less corn and more protein in which your cat needs to have in order to get energy. Even though the food might cost more, you will probably end up feeding your cat less of it. The ingredients are higher quality and since there is more protein in it, it will stay with your pet longer and not be processed out as fast.

Keep Litter Box Clean

When you use the bathroom, you can flush and be rid of anything. Your cat, however, is dependent on you to keep their litter box clean. Keeping it clean every day is important too, especially if you have more than one cat. Feces contains all kinds of viruses and germs that could be harmful to your pet or the other members of your family. Scoop out the dirty litter and throw it away each day. Add in more litter and baking soda – if desired – to keep any odors down. Change the entire litter box weekly if you don’t use a bag to pull it out regularly. And when there are dogs in the house, you need to keep them away from the litter box too, as some dogs have a bad habit of eating out of it and getting sick.
