Options For Taking Care of Your Dog When You Are Away

When you are a single person or even a family that has to travel somewhere and the dog can’t go, you still need to take care of the dog. You can’t just shrug and walk out of the house! Dogs will need to have other arrangements made for them in your absence. There are several options for taking care of your dog when you are away that you can do.

Kennels

A kennel is a professional dog boarder. Kennels are supposed to be certified and checked in specific states to make sure they are following all of the rules. The signs of a good kennel include friendly people working the counter, clean stalls for the dogs, lots of room to run and play and places where the stink isn’t overwhelming. There will be a smell of dog, but that is given considering the business. As long as the smell isn’t terrible or because the dogs aren’t being cleaned up after, it’s probably OK.
In order for your dog to attend a kennel, they will require special shots. The vet administers these shots and you have to provide the paperwork before the kennel will allow your dog entrance. Your dog will also be checked to make sure it doesn’t have fleas. Once they check the paperwork and do the flea test, your dog is allowed in to the kennel. Depending on the kennel, you might be able to bring in their bedding and a toy from home. Their own food is usually brought in as well so their diet isn’t altered.Taking Care of Your Dog When You Are Away

Neighbors

If your travel is going to be short term, such as just an overnight trek somewhere for work or a quick getaway, your neighbors are a good option. When you have neighbors who are friends and you trust them with the key to your house, have them walk over and let the dog out a few times. When they live close and it is for 24 hours or so, the dog will only need to be let out a few times. They might need to put a scoop of food in the dish a couple of times too, but that usually isn’t a big deal. As a thank you, give them a gift certificate or a case of beer – depending on the neighbor!

Friends

Good friends will care for your pets like they would your kids. Ask your friends if they will take in your dog for a few days or a week while you are gone for work or on a vacation where dogs can’t be. It will be like a sleepover for your dog! Pack their food, their bedding, their leash and a few toys for them to have while you are gone. If it makes it easier, have the dog make a few visits for short periods before you are gone for a long period. If the dog makes regular visits to their house, it isn’t necessary because they will already be familiar with it.

And finally... pet hotels.
